Wat Mahathat is the largest in the city. It was built in the 13th century. Many believe that it was the administrative as well as spiritual center. It was surrounded by a brick wall and a moat "to represent the outer wall of the universe and the cosmic ocean." Whatever the significance was, there are 198 chedis within this monastery.
